Ukraine accuses Russia almost daily of carrying out drone attacks on its territory. Kiev usually shoots them down, but Moscow has reportedly added a new tool to its Shahed drones that could change the situation. It is an infrared device that could disrupt some of the systems Ukraine uses to detect and intercept these drones.
An innovation that could change a lot in Ukraine. Ukrainian military technology expert Serhii Flash has spotted a new tool on Russian drones. He published images of it in specialized media. The footage shows an infrared device on a Russian Shahed drone, reports Le Parisien. Its purpose is to “disrupt or blind enemy sensors.” Specifically, these infrared lights would prevent Ukrainian sensors from detecting drones at night.
To protect itself from near-daily Russian attacks on its territory, Ukraine has acquired interceptor drones and other aircraft. However, this new Russian tool could negatively affect drones of previous generations. The most modern drones are protected against this type of infrared radiation or use thermal cameras, which will not be affected by these lights. On the other hand, Ukrainian helicopters, which can intercept up to 40% of drones in some areas, would be at a disadvantage.
Are the negotiations stalled?
Just when negotiations seemed to be going better than ever, everything fell apart a week ago. Upon Volodymyr Zelensky’s return from Florida, where he met with Donald Trump and advanced his peace plan, Moscow accused Kiev of trying to attack Vladimir Putin’s residence. Ukraine denied the accusation, but this has prompted Russia to intensify its attacks on the front lines and tighten peace negotiations. In addition, the U.S. attack on Venezuela on Saturday, January 3, was harshly criticized by Vladimir Putin and his allies. As for the peace talks, they continue on Monday, January 5 in Kiev, between Ukraine and its European and American allies.
