When I walked into the kitchen, I saw her.
She was sitting at our table. Still in her waitress uniform. Hands folded neatly in her lap.
Daniel stood behind her.
And the look in his eyes — I had never seen it before.
Disappointment. Hurt. Confusion.
“What is going on?” I whispered.
Daniel spoke first.
“She didn’t come here to ruin your life.”
My throat tightened.
“She came to save it.”
He stepped aside slightly.
“She’s a stem cell match for Lily.”
My knees buckled.
